DESCRIPTION

Suitable for enthusiastic beginners although some regular experience of painting may be useful. This is an introduction to oils and building a composition in still life. All materials & equipment (except brushes) are provided. Please note we use Zest It low-odour solvents and mediums. WHAT WE'LL BE DOING Each week we'll work through the processes of creating a still life in oils on canvas. Firstly we'll get a taste of working with oils by playing with a simple still life i.e. lemons on a white surface. We'll then build our own still life composition with our own objects brought in from home thinking about energy, light and colour and how these effect the composition. Once we're happy with it we'll use it to create our final pieces, firstly sketching it, then underpainting on a large 20" or similar sized canvas in a single colour to capture all essential elements of the painting and to make the composition work in practice on the canvas. Continuing to build in layers we then work through adding further colour and playing with the paint, brush marks and texture to realise a beautiful painting full of energy, light and colour. We'll use mediums to increase paint flow and look at how we can effect the impact of our paintings by using glazes. WHAT IT INCLUDES The price of the workshop includes all materials & equipment (except brushes), tuition and venue. WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO BRING Brushes are always best looked after by their owners. Please bring along a range of large brushes including: a 1-2” firm flat brush (this could be a good quality decorators brush), something like a number 8 and 4 long filbert bristle brushes, and perhaps a softer round brush size 2-4. The filbert brush is useful because it can be used on it's wide flat edge or side tip. You’ll need to wear suitable clothing. You are welcome to bring along your sketchbooks for use in some of the prep work but this is not essential. WHERE TO BUY BRUSHES The artists brushes I have suggested above are all available from West of Wales Art Supplies on Market Street in Haverfordwest (see Jeff). You can also get them on-line.
